Subdivided in 1921 as part of the Peterborough Estate, Lake Illawarra South was for many years populated by fishing shacks and weekenders, before the lake views sent property prices beyond the $1 million mark. One of the most well-known addresses was Clermont Guest House which was built in 1929 at 13-15 Reddall Pde by RW Harradine.According to the book, 150 Years of Shellharbour, the guest house originally contained 40 rooms and a dance floor, reflecting the rise in popularity of the area as a tourist destination and a much sought-after spot for honeymooners. Many social dances, concerts and functions, together with church services, were held as Clermont became the cultural centre of the area. The building was later converted to a boarding house but eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2002.SEND US YOUR OLD PHOTOSWe are looking for interesting photos from the past.
